Is ProMind Complex safe?

It is a supplement, not a medicine

ProMind Complex is a dietary supplement for healthy adults. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent dementia, Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, stroke or any other condition, and it is not a substitute for prescribed treatment or medical assessment. No independent clinical trial of the finished formula has been published.

Who should not take it

Anyone under 18. The formula is made for adults.

Pregnant or nursing women, and women who could become pregnant. This formula contains vinpocetine, and the FDA advises this group not to take it, citing findings that it may cause miscarriage or harm fetal development. This applies whether or not you are currently trying to conceive.

Anyone with a bleeding disorder, or scheduled for surgery. Ginkgo biloba may increase bleeding risk.

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you take

Anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines — warfarin, clopidogrel, or regular aspirin. Ginkgo may increase bleeding risk alongside these.

Cholinesterase inhibitors or anticholinergic medicines — huperzine A acts on the same cholinergic system as donepezil and similar drugs.

Antidepressants, blood pressure medicines or seizure medicines — and anything metabolised through CYP450 enzymes, which bacopa may affect.

If you are unsure whether something you take falls into these groups, take the product label to a pharmacist. It is a two-minute conversation and it is free.

See a doctor rather than self-treating if you have

Memory problems that are getting worse rather than staying steady. Difficulty completing familiar tasks. Confusion about time or place. Changes in personality, mood or judgement. Trouble finding words in ordinary conversation. Or memory changes that other people noticed before you did.

These warrant proper assessment. Several causes of memory difficulty are treatable when identified — thyroid problems, vitamin B12 deficiency, medication side effects, sleep disorders and depression among them. Reaching for a supplement instead of an assessment delays finding out, and that delay is the actual risk.

Possible side effects

Most people report none. A minority notice mild headaches, digestive upset or slight restlessness in the first week, which usually settles with continued use or when the capsules are taken with food rather than on an empty stomach.

Stop use and seek advice if you notice a rash, unusual bruising or bleeding, or any other unexpected symptom. Keep out of reach of children.
